Our X-Large hand carved Bone Toki featuring engravings and a Maori Taniwha face. This necklace has traditional bindings with a hand plaited waxed cord and is adjustable for that perfect fit. Toki is also referred to as a Adz Blade and is such an important tool in Maori life that it became regarded as a symbol of power, authority and good character. It is also the mark of the craftsman and artist bringing together head, hand and heart.
The Taniwha is one of the more ancient mythical beings which are said inhabit the depths of the sea and rivers. It is the guardian of its realm and can punish those who travel on the water without showing the proper respect or protect those who do.
When a catch is made in a river or the sea, the first of the catch is always returned to the water as a mark of respect for the Taniwha and its domain.
