Traditional Wooden Wahaika | Māori Warrior (Stained)
This hand-carved traditional Wahaika, meaning “mouth of the fish”, is a striking replica of the close-combat weapon once used by Māori warriors. Crafted from wood with a rich stained finish, it features detailed engravings that honor the craftsmanship and symbolism of the original pieces. Traditionally, the Wahaika was reserved for only the most respected tribal members.
Along the edge, a carved figure with paua shell (abalone) eyes representing either an ancestor or a guardian deity, faces the warrior, symbolically watching over their shoulder to protect against attacks from behind. The front hook was strategically designed to catch and trap an opponent’s weapon, allowing the warrior to twist it away and deliver a decisive blow.
This piece is a powerful representation of Māori heritage, strength, and warrior spirit.
