A dark jade Toki pendant with Koru engraving, crafted by artist Ewan Parker using New Zealand Jade. Included are a waxed braid cord. The Adze (Toki) was used for building and decorating Waka (canoes) and Whare (meeting house).

Carved Toki range from very plain tools through to magnificent works of art. they were skillfully shaped from all kinds of Pounamu, but the most prized was the hard Pounamu that could keep a sharp cutting edge comparable with metal. the toki design carries deep symbolism associated with strength, courage, wisdom and ability.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Ewan Parker & Wayne Turnbull are master jade carvers sharing a studio in a rural town on the East Coast of New Zealand's North Island.

Their work is very distinctive with a bold yet elegant style and ranging from very traditional and finely detailed Tiki through to more contemporary renditions of traditional elements such as the Koru and Toki. 

They work almost exclusively in New Zealand jades which are known as Pounamu or Greenstone creating amazing wearable art, jewelry and necklaces.
