The Toki or adze blade is the mark of an artist or creative person and the bringing together of head, hand and heart. The twist is an eternity symbol representing the joining of peoples and the many paths of life.
ABOUT POUNAMU: Pounamu is the Maori name for New Zealand nephrite jade and a variety of serpentine. If it’s not from New Zealand it cannot be called “Pounamu”. The term Pounamu includes a very hard variety of serpentine which the Maori call Tangiwai. Serpentine is not jade so items carved in Tangiwai are labelled as such and include info about the stone in the listing.
ABOUT THE ARTIST: Ewan Parker & Wayne Turnbull are master jade carvers sharing a studio in a rural town on the East Coast of New Zealand's North Island.
Their work is very distinctive with a bold yet elegant style and ranging from very traditional and finely detailed Tiki through to more contemporary renditions of traditional elements such as the Koru and Toki.
They work almost exclusively in New Zealand jades which are known as Pounamu or Greenstone creating amazing wearable art, jewelry and necklaces.
